Importance of maintenance:

We have all gotten so used to Porsche reliability that often the mileage is exceeded before the scheduled maintenance is performed. It is a good idea to refresh your memory and read your owners manual, especially the maintenance section and the items that require service regularly. The life of the vehicle is now dictated by how the vehicle is cared for. The old adage "A stitch in time saves nine..." is too often correct. We are going through an electronic revolution and the on-board check engine lightcomputers in cars are no exception. Year to year (and even within the year) there are updates and software changes. When new models are introduced there is often a teething time period to resolve new car issues. It is important as an owner to stay informed, follow prescribed maintenance, and use quality parts and fluids when servicing your Porsche.

Experience:

Yesterday's mechanics are either retiring or are making the transition to technicians and gaining a level of training closely compared to an electrical engineer. Our formal training continues with regular classes and studying to keep current in the ever-changing marketplace. Lufteknic is one of the few facilities in the country with such a wide range of experience. We have experience from the 356 to the most current models that have been released to the market. Most shops today have a concentration with either new products and tuning, or maintaining the older cars. Our workshop is able to successfully do both. From our training and experience, to understanding the history, we successfully service Porsches from 1950 to present day. We all own and drive the cars we service and enjoy doing what we do. We are here to share our experiences and help the enthusiasts maintain the cars they love.

Diagnostics:

Since the introduction of OBD II (On Board Diagnostics) there are more sensors and parameters that are monitoring engine performance and tailpipe emissions. The goal each year as a car manufacturer is reduced emissions from the tailpipe. A simple oil change can affect vehicle performance and the monitoring sensors. In the new 986, 996, 997 cars, the on board computers are more sensitive than ever. All the components are now integrated through one gateway the OBD port. Now the ABS (brake system), DME (engine control), instrument cluster, climate control, radio, and automatic transmission control are all tied together. It is truly a symbiotic relationship between the components (modules) for each system. They can all affect each other. Due to the complexity, repairs can take time to achieve the desired result. Intermittent problems are common and can often take time to develop enough information to understand what component needs servicing. The infamous "check engine" light is here to stay. It is not a matter of "if," but "when" it will illuminate. Its function is a guide to performance and maintenance that may be needed to keep the car in top condition.

Tools we use:

Our cabinets are ever-expanding with specialty tools, from hand tools to software and computers. Many tools are made specifically for a certain task. Our workshop is full of German hand tools and Porsche designed implements for servicing your car. This is a requirement. There is nothing better than the right tool for the job. Porsches are fully metric with tendencies for different sizes for different years.

We also use several types of diagnostic equipment to help in determining problems. We have several versions of the PST (Porsche System Tool) software. We are perhaps one of a handful of independent shops in North America with both the PST2 and PIWIS tools in their service bay. We can properly service all late model Porsches including 997TT, 997GT3, Cayenne, Cayman, and Boxsters.

Our shelves are full of workshop literature that includes technical bulletins, repair manuals, wiring diagrams, and parts books. Our computers are packed full of technical information as well. We have manuals for every Porsche street car produced in either electronic format or traditional paper, including the 959 and Carrera GT (980).

Parts used in service
Parts used in servicing:

Porsche is a car manufacturer that relies on outside suppliers for the vehicle assembly. For example Bosch makes electrical parts. Bosch sells these parts to suppliers that can distribute to repair shops. We use parts from the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) suppliers, such as Bosch, Mahle, Hella, Beru, etc. High quality parts are a must when servicing high-line cars such as Porsche. We use both OEM parts as well as Genuine Porsche replacement parts.

We do not install customer-supplied parts.
