Our shop truck. Why have a pick-up? when the Porsche heritage is tied to the VW
marque. So a 1956 Panel Bus was needing a new home and we jumped at the rare find.
Its home had been Southern California for its entire life. A working Bus all its
life with errands, and most of it being used at a private airport near Escondido,
as a fuel truck. Underneath is the school bus yellow paint, and the turn signal
lights had been removed and replaced with larger more visable units for airport
regulations. The loading doors on both sides of the Bus were a factory option,
hence the name "double door".
Many of the early Type-2 Buses ( the VW code for Bus/Transporter) have rotted
away, or long since sent to the junkyard. VW started producing the Bus in 1950,
and in the early 50s started exporting them around the world. The masses of Buses
didn't find the US shores until the late 50s. The US had only received a few Buses
through the early 50s so finding one now is difficult at best,. The
plan for this is a period correct restoration, locating all the bits and pieces
that are needed to put it back to its original appearance. This Bus is going to
be driven, and used for its intended purpose. The original engine, and driveline
has been replaced with later units, which are tired, so we are going to update
it's running gear from a 60s Bus to make it a bit more driveable. This Bus has
already been partially converted to 12 volt electrics, we will finish the upgrade.
A late 1600 core engine has been sourced, it will be freshened and installed.
The exterior will be painted in the original Dove Blue paintwork, and some Lufteknic
graphics will be applied. So look for some pictures, and the bus on the move in
the not to distant future. |
